Jujutsu Kaisen is about a high-school student, Yuuji, who unintentionally unleashes a series of curses and supernatural activities. As he joins the Jujutsu High School, he also discovers his powers as a sorcerer. From there on, his viaje (journey) begins as the host to the curse and being the sorcerer who will save the world from it.
The show has everything in it, from suspense, thrill, cursed demons who feed on humans, and a huge threat to the world. All of this forces Yuuji to transform from a lazy teen to a Jujutsu sorcerer who holds the power to save the world.
It is the Best Shonen Anime Out There
Now, I might be a bit biased when I say this, but hear me out. Despite the plot being large-scale with so many characters, it is still very balanced. The story unfolds beautifully, without it feeling dragged or rushed. It explains the entire Jujutsu universe and introduces the power dynamics in a very well-paced manner. I gotta give credit to the legendary creator Gege Akutami for this balance.
Beyond that, the show holds all the elements of a perfect Shonnen. Action-packed batalla (battle) sequences, strong friendships, and memorable side characters. (Hint: You will love Megumi).

Jujutsu Kaisen has won several awards for how amazing it is. Moreover, it has also received a great reception and has a huge fan following. Due to its popularity, its manga was also licensed to be released in English in the US. Shueisha’s Manga Plus offers the series in English as well.
Moreover, it is considered the world’s most popular anime by Guinness World Records. In fact, data states that it has even surpassed One Piece in popularity. In 2021, the series became the most talked-about show on Twitter. It has also won several premios (awards), like Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year award. Newtype Anime Awards awarded the show with the Best TV Anime award. Not to forget, it has also won the Best Animation of the Year award at the Tokyo Anime Awards.
So, the only reason you didn’t know about the amazing series is that you are an Anime newbie, or you have been living under a rock.
It Explores Controversial Themes that Redefine Shonen
According to most anime fans, calling it Shonen is an insult to the show. Because JJK is so much more than that. Where ordinary Shonen circles around themes of perseverance, friendship, and heroism, Jujutsu Kaizen explores these and more complex themes like fate and willpower. Not only that, it explores these themes in great depth, so much so that it will leave you emotionally satisfied.
Despite Yuuji being the main character, I feel like the programa (show) does not revolve around him. It focuses more on the politics between the good and the bad. Moreover, Yuuji’s character goes beyond the Shonen trope of being the chosen one. In fact, despite being chosen by accident (not going to give you a spoiler), he still works hard to make up for it.
It Treats Male and Female Characters Equally
Most Shonen solely focus on male characters and reduce female characters to hyper-sexualized beings with no major impact on the plot. However, Jujutsu Kaisen subverts this traditional portrayal of women and instead portrays them as equally headstrong and capable.
Now, despite the fact that the show has three major male characters who lead the plot, the personajes femeninos (female characters) like Nobara Kugisaki are strong, assertive, and impact the plot in their unique ways. Each female character has a distinct personality that is explored in depth. Their psychological experiences are given priority over their physical experiences.
This subverts the traditional depiction in Anime and mixes things up a bit.
